Canceled Courses
Recruiting sufficient SEI instructors remains a challenge. DESE does not have the number of instructors necessary to cover the courses for the 2014-2015 school year. Courses without instructors are listed as "TBD.". The department may have to cancel courses. If you have enrolled in a 2014-2015 Endorsement course that the department cancels, you will be assigned to the 2015-2016 cohort year and, subject to appropriation, will be given a no-cost opportunity to earn the Endorsement in 2015-2016.This includes educators in Cohort 1 whose training window would otherwise end in 2014-2015.

Course Waitlist
If you are unable to find an open seat in a 2014-2015 course, place your name on the course waitlist.  If you do not gain entry into that wait-listed course, you will be assigned to the 2015-2016 cohort year and, subject to appropriation, given a no-cost opportunity. This includes educators in Cohort I whose training window would otherwise end in 2014-2015.
Other Paths to Obtain the SEI Endorsement
No one is required to enroll in an SEI Endorsement course.  There are other paths to obtaining the endorsement - such as:

Pass the SEI MTEL. The cost is $185 and the responsibility of the educatoror

Possess a valid ESL/ELL licenseor

Possess a bachelor's degree in a department-approved major, or other department-approved graduate-level training.

If you have a valid ESL or ELL license or are an administrator who holds the SEI Teacher Endorsement, you qualify for the SEI Endorsement.  You must still apply for the endorsement, however.

If you believe you may qualify for the endorsement by virtue of having the appropriate degree or graduate level training, you may submit materials to the Office of Educator Licensure for a no-cost transcript review (See instructions below).
SEI MTEL

Core Academic Teachers Who Must Earn the SEI Endorsement but No Longer Have an ELL
The Department is developing a new SEI Endorsement course that will be available in the fall of the 2015-2016 school year.  This new course will enable core academic teachers who have had an ELL, but do not have ELLs in the 2014-2015 school year, to earn the endorsement during the required window.  Eligible educators include those in Cohort 1 who have no ELLs in the 2014-2015 school year but who had ELLS earlier in their district's training window and therefore must obtain the endorsement.

What Happens if I Don't Earn the Endorsement

If you do not obtain the SEI Endorsement during your cohort window, you will not be able to advance, renew or extend your core academic license(s) until you obtain the endorsement and you will have to earn the endorsement at your own expense.
As of July 1, 2016, all core academic teachers and administrators (as defined above) instructing ELLs must possess the SEI Endorsement or earn it within one year of the date that an ELL student is assigned. Lack of the SEI Endorsement may affect your employment.
If you are in Cohort 2 or 3, be aware that in the 2015-2016 school year, the department plans to assign each eligible teacher and administrator who has not already self-enrolled and who has not obtained the SEI Endorsement to that final cohort training year.
